MATTHEW PELL
Biography
Matthew Pell (b.1968) is an English Video Artist & Photographer producing both personal and commissioned projects.
Initially Pell had aspirations to be a Fine Art painter but when, at the age of 10, his Father gave him a 35mm Practika Camera and a Cine 8 camera his passion for the still and moving image was born.
In 1990 Pell was awarded a HND in Communications (Audio Visual) from Dewsbury College.
Pell graduated in 1997 with an MA in Cinema Studies from Nottingham Trent University.
Since 2000 Pell has been producing single-screen videos inspired by modern architecture and urban environments. Pell's work concerns itself with an exploration of figurative movement, voyeurism and the manipulation of time and sound.
Much of Pell's work utilises looped, reversed, speeded or slowed footage, abstracted compositions, multiple frames and effected audio. The aim of all these techniques is to reflect upon the human condition within a city landscape. These observations and statements are for the viewer to validate, discard or propose new.
Music has always been an important part of Pell's life and work. From 1988 -1991 he performed in a three-piece called The Divine State. The band played throughout the East Midlands. Pell then spent two years in another three-piece band called Curious. His most recent project is an electro band called Monitor with long time friend and collaborator musician Kevin Ford.
